AMM 2022: Environmental focus in MMC - new growth points

The Astana Mining & Metallurgy - AMM 2022 International Mining Congress will be held in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, dated June 16-17, 2022.

For 12 years now, AMM has been one of the most representative industry events in Central Asia. Every year, the Congress engages the heads of industry ministries and organisations, representatives of national and international companies, investment funds and experts not only from Kazakhstan, but also the CIS and non-CIS countries. In the post-pandemic year 2021, 359 delegates from 14 countries attended the Congress, while 713 MMC professionals attended the exhibition.amm

The importance of MMC to Kazakhstan's economy is hard to overestimate, the continued growth rate over the past five years is a direct testament to this, and a doubling of production output is not the limit for Kazakhstan's metallurgy industry. According to the results of the past year 2021, mining of metal ores in the 12 months reached 3.3 trillion tonnes, compared to 2.2 trillion tonnes in the same period a year earlier. In the refining segment, the output of the metallurgical industry in monetary terms amounted to 7.7 trillion tenge, compared to 5.7 trillion tenge in the previous year. According to the Bureau of National Statistics of the Agency for Strategic Planning and Reforms of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Mining and Metallurgical Complex of the Republic of Kazakhstan accounted for about 30% of the total industrial output of the country, or 11 trillion Tenge in monetary terms, by the end of 12 months of 2021.

Today, the largest mining and metallurgical enterprises focus on environmental responsibility, decarbonisation, putting ESG strategies into practice, carbon neutrality and green metallurgy. "Kazakhstan has created all the conditions to attract foreign direct investment. We need a new Investment Policy Concept to increase the country's attractiveness in the context of the increasing demands of ESG, the global energy and technology approach," said President K.J. Tokayev speech. It is ESG-transformation that will serve as the main theme of the Plenary session of the Congress. Which will be attended by representatives of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the largest market players.

The content of the AMM 2022 Congress will also include investment trends for the mining industry, and experts will be able to discuss the appeal of MMC HR for investment. Together with the Investment Committee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, a panel session will be held, the key agenda of which will be prevention of risks for foreign investors in Kazakhstan.

There is no denying that the development of the mining and metallurgical industries is focused on the use of digital technology, productivity improvements and optimisation of business models.  The Autonomous Cluster Foundation Innovation Technology Park will hold a marathon to recognise the best solution to a production challenge among technology companies. ERG Exploration will present the application of innovative methods in exploration, which also serves as a new impetus in terms of exploration and subsoil use, as the President mentioned earlier.

Traditionally, with the support of the DRAGMET Association, the III Forum of Gold Producers of Kazakhstan will be held during the Congress. The second day of program will include the III Coal Forum, held annually in partnership with the AGMP. The importance of human capital in the mining industry and contribution to the candidate pool - will be the main topics for PR and HR specialists at MMC. The experts invited to take part in the masterclass on PR and HR section included A.M. Dybal, Deputy General Director for Corporate Communications, Member of the Management Board of Gazprom Neft PJSC, and Kate Mallinson, is a researcher at PRISM, a UK-based political risk and business intelligence advisory, and an expert at Chatham House Analytic Centre.

According to the President's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, a roundtable on decarbonisation and carbon neutrality as the main pathways to sustainable development in Kazakhstan will be organised as part of the MMC.

The AMM Congress truly retains its status as the most effective dialogue platform for identifying new development opportunities and finding trustworthy business partnerships. Every year since 2016, b2b and g2b meetings have been held with subsoil user companies of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Delegates and exhibitors have the opportunity to have business meetings with representatives of ArcelorMittal, Eurasian Resources Group (ERG), KAZ Minerals, Kazakhmys, Kazzinc, Polymetal, Kazatomprom NAC JSC and Bogatyr Komir LLP. In total, more than 600 business meetings took place within the AMM, 25% of which resulted by the successful signing of contracts.

Traditionally, the annual Golden Hephaestus industry competition will take place during the AMM, with a competent, independent jury recognising the best professionals in the mining and metallurgical sector. ERG (Eurasia Group) is the traditional General Partner of the competition.

Iteca Kazakhstan Exhibition Company is the organiser. State Partner of the Congress and Exhibition AMM 2022 Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
